Scott Hawranek

Scott Hawranek is a registered patent attorney and partner in the Intellectual Property practice of Gavrilov & Brooks in the firm’s Colorado Springs office. Drawing on more than two decades of experience, he counsels medical device, semiconductor, software, and telecommunications companies, from startups to established businesses, on developing, protecting, and enforcing their most valuable intellectual property, domestically and globally.

Scott represents technology companies in high-stakes patent litigation and complex intellectual property disputes involving patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, trademark and trade dress infringement, and copyright claims. He asserts and defends intellectual property rights in federal courts and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including in inter partes review (IPR) and ex parte reexamination proceedings. He advises companies on enforcement strategy, damages strategy, litigation funding, and alternative fee arrangements, and works with litigation funders to structure and finance litigation.

Scott began his career as a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office patent examiner, where he examined patent applications involving semiconductor devices and fabrication methods. He later served as in-house intellectual property counsel for an international medical device company and practiced with national and international law firms. Before entering the law, Scott worked as a research and development engineer building semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Having worked as an engineer, examiner, in-house counsel, and advocate, Scott understands how intellectual property is created, evaluated, challenged, financed, and leveraged as a strategic business asset.
